A free online course to cultivate safer, fairer and more inclusive digital spaces

Digital media today has a double edge: it can either deepen divisions or help build connections across societies. In a context marked by disinformation, polarization, and unequal participation, the need for responsible digital engagement has become urgent.

Many online spaces amplify exclusion, silence marginalized voices, and spread harmful narratives. These challenges have driven the creation of the Digital Media for Inclusive Peacebuilding Course within the Include Me+ project. The course invites learners to actively choose a more inclusive and constructive digital future.

One of the main motivations behind the course is to address key issues shaping today’s digital environment. These include the need for ethical digital media policies that ensure transparency and accountability, especially at the European level. Another major challenge is improving digital literacy so users can critically assess online content and counter misinformation. The course also responds to low civic participation online, particularly among underrepresented groups. Additionally, it tackles social fragmentation by promoting intercultural dialogue and works to integrate peacebuilding practices into digital communication.

To respond to these challenges, the course is structured into seven comprehensive modules. It begins with the foundations of inclusive digital media, introducing key concepts and balancing freedom of expression with inclusion. It then explores how to remove online borders by improving representation in migration-related narratives. Other modules focus on bridging social divides, using media for peacebuilding, and empowering digital activism. The course also emphasizes storytelling to amplify diverse voices and concludes with a focus on ethics and governance in digital environments.

Each module is designed to provide both theoretical knowledge and practical application. In particular, the course includes interactive case studies based on real European initiatives, as well as multimedia materials that bring concepts to life. It features reflective exercises to encourage deeper analysis and academic materials to provide further insight, but also practical tools such as campaign planners, storytelling frameworks, and facilitation guides. Overall, combining critical thinking with actionable strategies, the course equips participants with the skills and knowledge needed to build safer, fairer, and more inclusive digital spaces.
